Our mission is to provide a dual curriculum of excellence in Secular and Judaic Studies, encouraging active minds and bodies, moral and spiritual growth, and leadership development in a nurturing environment.
LCDS offers programs in both Early Childhood and Elementary Education, as well as an After School Program and Summer Camp. Centrally located on Miami Beach, we are your childs complete educational experience. Come and grow with us.
History
Rabbi Irving Lehrman founded Lehrman Day School in 1960. He envisioned a school where the children of Miami Beach and the greater Miami community would receive a quality Secular and Jewish Studies education in a positive and warm atmosphere. Since its inception, LCDS has educated four generations of Jewish leaders and provided thousands with the opportunity to excel academically, socially and spiritually.
In the winter of 2001, with the assistance of visionaries like Michael Adler and Norman Braman, Lehrman Day School became an independent community day school and was renamed Lehrman Community Day School. Lehrman Community Day School is proud to be affiliated with the Greater Miami Jewish Federation as well as Temple Beth Sholom, Temple Emanu-El and Temple Menorah.
LCDS is accredited by the Association of Independent Schools of Florida (AISF), the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation, and the National Council for Private School Accreditation (NCPSA). LCDS is also a permanently chartered member of the Solomon Schechter Day School Association, affiliated with the Center for Advancement of Jewish Education (CAJE-Miami), and the Dade Association of Academic Non-Public Schools (DAANS). In addition, we are investigating accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
Early Childhood Education
The Early Childhood Department at Lehrman Community Day School promotes the physical, social, emotional and cognitive development of young children through an interactive and thematic approach to learning. Creative and caring teachers strive to foster childrens growth and development in a safe and nurturing environment. At LCDS we teach and model kindness, respect for self and others, creativity, love, independence and interdependence, cooperation, self-confidence, and Jewish values and traditions. Early Childhood students experience many new and exciting ideas, feelings, and thoughts, which they share with their peers and teachers.
The Early Childhood curriculum is implemented with attention to the different needs, interests, and developmental levels of individual children. Learning objectives are based on weekly/bi-weekly themes and are integrated with language arts, science, social studies, math, music, art, physical education and Judaic studies goals and objectives. Each topic is explored in depth so that the students develop an understanding appropriate to their respective grade level.
Elementary Education (Grades K - 6)
Secular Studies
Students at LCDS study Language Arts (reading and literature, expressive writing, journaling and penmanship, vocabulary and spelling) and Mathematics everyday. Science and social studies are studied multiple times in any given week. In addition, students visit with specialists each week for each of their specialty subjects. Students are encouraged to strive for excellence. Friday Folders provide an opportunity for parents to take note of their childrens work, as do regular reports provided on a trimester basis. Homework books for students in the upper elementary grades further increase the means by which parent, student and teacher can communicate regularly.
Hebrew and Judaic Studies
The Judaic Studies Department at LCDS strives to nurture childrens academic, social, moral and spiritual development, together with an appreciation and affinity for the State of Israel and Clal Yisrael (the Jewish People). To that end children at LCDS study Modern Hebrew in addition to Torah, Prophets, Jewish history, current events, Jewish holidays and the Jewish lifecycle. Students also participate in prayer daily, frequently leading our community in worship, and learn about and celebrate all Jewish holidays. Acts of gmilut hasadim (acts of loving kindness) are an integral part of the Judaic Studies program as well; students on a monthly basis partake in charitable activities. Our goal is to provide educational opportunities and synagogue experiences that will meet the current and future needs our students, equipping them for their participation as full members of the Jewish community.
Camp Lehrman
Camp Lehrman offers children the opportunity to enjoy a fun and exciting summer! We focus on meeting the needs of every child who attends - from our Mini Steps program up to our Adventure Camp program. Each camper receives the individualized attention necessary to help them develop to his or her fullest potential. Camp Lehrman, like its day school counterpart, continues to foster the importance of Jewish continuity. Jewish themes are incorporated into weekly activities such as Music, Dance and Art.
