Founded in 1983, the Miami Childrens Museum is located on Watson Island and opened its new building to the public on September 7, 2003. Visitors of all ages are encouraged to play together, learn, imagine and create. The 56,500 square-foot facility includes 12 galleries, classrooms, parent/teacher resource center, Kid Smart educational gift shop, 200-seat auditorium and Subway restaurant. The museum offers hundreds of bilingual, interactive exhibits; programs and classes and learning materials related to arts, culture, community and communication.
MCMs Parent/Teacher Resource Center (PTRC) offers the following no-cost or low-cost resources for caregivers and educators of South Floridas early learners
Lending Library: Our holdings include a range of resources with a focus on the development of children birth to five years old. Includes curriculum and parenting books, Ed-U-kits, manipulatives, videos, CDs and DVDs.
Early Childhood Expertise: PTRC staff is on hand to work with visitors to select appropriate books and activities, assist educators in developing exciting curriculum and researching issues relevant to your infant, toddler or preschool age learner.
Current News: On the shelves and covering our bulletin boards are monthly parenting and teaching magazines and up to date info on local, state and federal Early Childhood policy.
Equipment & Technology: Patrons have access to internet stations, scanner, photo copier, educator-sized laminator and die-cut machine. Coaching sessions for Microsoft Word and Excel and creating Power Point are available, with an appointment.
Monthly Presenters Series & Educator Workshops: Community experts present information on a variety of themes from adoption and foster parenting to emerging literacy and book making. Dates and topics for presentations and professional development workshops can be viewed at our website.
