SPANISH SUMMER CAMP METHODOLOGY
Language classes represent a major aspect of our camp. We believe that by exposing the child to the broad environment that the knowledge of a second language and other cultures bring about, he/she is provided with a gift that is an advantage for life, given the global environment in which today's children will live tomorrow. Other camp activities reinforce language acquisition. Language classes are based on the Natural Approach Theory which assumes that language is acquired by comprehensible input rather that by traditional grammar and vocabulary lectures. The comprehensible input calls for the incorporation of stimuli representing the different levels of language acquisition; thus avoiding boredom, lack of self-steem, or high anxiety about speaking the new language. Fluency results from a progression of four natural stages of language acquisition that resembles the same steps children follow when they learn their first language:
Reproduction: Children do not speak the language at all. Non-verbal responses are prompted.
Early Production: Children are just beginning to speak. One word responses are prompted.
Speech Emergence: Children put together short sentences.
Intermediate Fluency: Children communicate in longer, more complex forms of expression.
The way to engage children is by practically surrounding them with the new language through multi-sensory techniques (visual, auditory, and physical practice), so they can perceive through all their senses. They will be most motivated when they can see, hear, say, and feel the language. This is what we do at Lingua: we apply multi-sensory techniques so that they not only learn in their personal style but also feel thrilled about it. In this way, language acquisition evolves naturally.
