Ski School:
If you want to learn how to water ski, are an intermediate, or an advanced skier, McGinnis WaterSki will teach you. Every day we teach a new person to ski. We use the boom, which is a 15 foot extension pole on the side of the boat (as shown below). Once you have mastered the boom, you will try the 5 foot extension handle off the boom and then onto the long rope out the back of the boat. You will learn in half the time with a professional lesson.
Slalom:
Once you have mastered two skis it is onto slalom skiing. We will teach you how to get up on a slalom ski every time. You will learn to cross the wake, using the correct position and technique. Next you will learn the half slalom course, this teaches you rhythm and timing. Finally you will progress to the full course. You will learn the full course in segments, starting by being able to ski around number 1 and number 6 ball and then gradually closing the gap. When you can ski the full course, you will progress to higher speeds and shorter lines. Then the fun really begins!
Wakeboarding:
Learning to get up on a wakeboard is a technique. Many people come to us just not able to get out of the water on a board. We will teach you on the boom, and get you started immediately. First you must learn the basics, just riding back and forth on the wakes. Next you will learn to jump the wakes and then its onto some easy tricks.
Kids Camp:
During the summer we have a water ski program for children between the ages of 9 to 14 years old. The program provides fun and excitement while developing water skiing skills. It is designed for active participation, from beginning water skiing, wakeboarding, kneeboarding to intermediate to advanced. The camp is small, this way we make sure skiers get plenty of time on the water. Camp starts in June and runs through August, during the summer school vacation.

The McGinnis family found Butterfly Lake in 1978, it was an old rock pit dug out for its precious sand and coral. The Biscayne Aquifer springs were dug into during the excavation process (the underwater lake that feeds south Florida) and a lake was formed. It was John and Joyce McGinnis's dream to own a water ski lake in south Florida and they found the perfect site at Butterfly Lake.
Soon after, they built some property and opened up a ski school. For many years it was run by various skiers. Dave and Cyndi Benzel ran a ski camp for a while and Rusty Carter ran the lake for many years. In 1988 the ski school was taken over by J.P. and Ann McGinnis.
Our site is 50 acres of the finest freshest water you will ski on. We are protected from the prevailing wind and the lake is always smooth and perfect. During the summer the water temperature is 88 degrees Fahrenheit and during the coldest winter months, it hardly ever dips below 70 degrees. Our air and water temperatures will stay 10-15 degrees warmer in the winter than the central and northern parts of the state due to the Gulf Stream coming close to shore in West Palm Beach.
It is a wonderful ski site, and the conditions are fantastic year round. You can always guarantee a good ski session, and you will be thoroughly spoiled by the warm water and smooth conditions. No other boat traffic uses the lake, the environment is totally controlled, these are the best conditions to enjoy your sport!
