It is our belief that each child is a unique individual with his own special needs and background, and should be recognized as someone special. In order for the child to grow and learn, he must first feel safe, accepted, and competent in an environment that is encouraging, nurturing, supportive and challenging. Our main objective is to offer a carefully planned prepared environment and a curriculum that allows the child to experience the joy of learning. Time to enjoy the process, insures the development of self-esteem, and provides the experiences, which are essential for a lifetime of creative thinking and learning. The Montessori School of North Miami helps the child develop within himself the foundational habits, attitudes, skills and ideas. Our goals for the child are:
To develop a positive attitude toward school and learning.
To develop a sense of high self-esteem.
To establish a habit of concentration for lifelong study skills.
To develop and foster curiosity.
To acquire the basic skills necessary for a lifetime of learning.
To develop habits of initiative and persistence.
To foster inner discipline and a sense of order.
To develop socially acceptable behavior.
To develop the child's innate ultimate potential through high self-expectation.
The Montessori classrooms provide a prepared environment in where children can be driven naturally to work and learn. The children's inherent love of learning is encouraged by giving them the opportunity to be spontaneous, and engage in meaningful activities under the guidance of a trained directress. Through their work children develop concentration, motivation, persistence, and discipline. Within this framework of order they progress at their pace and rhythm according to their individual capabilities. Acquiring the love of learning and learn how to learn is our goal. With this in mind we have organized our curriculum, which is ahead of the traditional curriculum. We have based our curriculum on the Maria Montessori teachings. The curriculum presents lessons simple and concretely in the early years, and are introduced again in a more abstract and complex presentation during the subsequent years. As children reach the elementary years, they will be challenged to pursue a considerable amount of library and field research both in and outside of the school. Following is an overview of the core of our curriculum in the areas of practical life, sensory training, language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science for students age 3 through the Elementary level and Middle School.
