Reading Lab
This academic program at Alexander School is conducted in English, and is for advanced readers and children who need extra help. Particularly those whose first language is not English. We have a Reading Lab under the direction of an experienced reading clinician, equipped with a wide range of reading machines and audio-visual equipment to assist children to learn to read and to reinforce reading skills. Children who have come to us with no English have successfully graduated from Alexander School as a result of the work in the Reading Lab. Most schools do not have such help available on campus. The Reading Lab is open to campers and non-campers during the summer months.
ESOL
English for Speakers of Other Languages. ESOL is designed to teach students with limited English proficiency. We provide intensive instruction in the development of communication skills in English as a new language. ESOL is a language arts and cultural program designed to meet the specific needs of students in language-learning and cultural integration. It includes listening comprehension, oral expression, pronunciation, reading, and writing. It supports the skills and concepts presented in the regular English curriculum and is coordinated with classroom instruction.
Math Lab and Mortensen Mathematics
This unique system employs manipulative materials which enable the child to discover the concepts and to unlock the abstractions of mathematics so that they understand why the rules and processes of mathematics work. The study of mathematics becomes not a process of memorization, but of true understanding. Alexander School adopted this program several years ago. It has proven to be the most effective method of teaching mathematics developed to date. Instead of disliking and being anxious about mathematics, the children look forward to math. This method is not widely used in Florida, because it is expensive and it requires teachers to be specially trained. Many schools are not motivated to undertake this expense. Alexander School has done so because we believe our children deserve every opportunity to achieve.
Spanish
Skill in Spanish is important in South Florida. Children whose heritage is Spanish and who may speak it at home often do not develop appropriate skills in reading and writing this language. Our objective is to develop skills in conversational Spanish and to enhance the reading and writing skills in this language.
Computer Education
Computers are first introduced to the children at the Preschool level, where special programs suited to this young age give the children their first experience with this tool. Lower and Middle School children receive regular instruction in the computer lab, which is furnished with state-of-the-art Apple Macintosh computers. Computers are also in the classroom, where they are used for reinforcement of academic skills.
