Cool Kids Learn runs three major programs during the year the SES Program, the After School Program, and the Summer Program. Programs are built on three fundamental academic building blocks: Team Projects, Basic Build Up, and Homework Time. In addition, all Cool Kids Learn programs include Play Time, Snack and Reflection.
Team Projects
Because children are experts on what interests and motivates them, student-driven project learning is a key component of the Cool Kids Learn program. Project work gives students an opportunity to apply the skills they are learning in school through group examination of a subject (e.g., plants, water, zoo animals). Students are encouraged to participate in the project design and work, with the aid of instructors and volunteers, to answer their own questions. Depending on the groups age, project work may involve library research, interviews, plays, fieldtrips or other methods of measurement and expression.
For some projects, volunteers from the community will be asked to participate. On a project about fire, students might visit a local fire station. A project about hospitals might involve interviewing a local physician. Project work promotes exploration, wonder and investigation and allows children to approach learning from a direction that interests them and holds their attention.
Basic Buildup
Because reading and math are the foundation from which students learn all other subjects, Cool Kids Learn provides additional instruction in reading and math. Through the use of interactive supplemental materials and group and individual games, Cool Kids Learn instructors help children master these critical subjects in order to reach or exceed grade level performance.
Homework Time (school year only)
Homework gives students the opportunity to demonstrate their proficiency in the skills they are learning in class. Therefore, during the school year, homework time is also a regular part of the Cool Kids Learn Program. It offers students a quiet time to focus on their homework and receive guidance when necessary. Students learn perseverance and develop the confidence that comes from being up to speed in class.
Play Time
We believe that kids need time for structured and unstructured play. Structured play gives children the chance to work in teams and practice being cooperative, while unstructured play allows them time to hang out with their friends and be creative.
Snack
Children need fuel to keep their minds and bodies active. For that reason, Cool Kids Learn provides drinks and snacks to keep them going.
Reflection
Reflection period is one of Cool Kids Learns unique activities. During reflection time, at the end of the day, kids can wind down and share whats on their minds - what happened in school or the program that day, what they liked a lot or didnt like. Everyone, including kids, needs the time to talk about their day. Cool Kids Learn gives them that opportunity.
