Route Rating Information
Our routes start with rating of 5.5. These routes have big holds and are very easy routes to learn the basics of climbing on, even for young kids. As the number of the rating increases the route becomes more difficult. Our most difficult routes have a rating of 5.13.
The Yosemite Decimal System (YDS) is a numerical system used for rating the difficulty of walks, hikes, climbs, and mountaineering routes. The rock climbing (5.x) portion of the scale is the primary climb grading system used in the US. The scale was initially developed as the Sierra Club grading system in the 1930s to rate hikes and climbs in the Sierra Nevada range.
Currently, according to the climbing textbook Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills, the system divides all hikes and climbs into five classes:
Class 1: walking or hiking.
Classes 2 and 3: steeper scrambling with increased exposure.
Class 4: can involve short steep sections where the use of a rope is recommended.
Class 5: is considered true rock climbing, predominantly on vertical or near vertical rock, and requires skill and a rope to proceed safely.
The class of a route is derived from its "crux" or hardest move. Modern application of climbing grades, especially on climbs at the upper end of the scale, also consider how sustained or strenuous a climb is, in addition to the difficulty of the single hardest move.
