
KIMBERLY DANIEL DE ACHA founded PAI with Jo Ella Todd in 1995. With degrees from the University of Cincinnati, C-CM, and the New England Conservatory, she is a member of the University of Miami, School of Music faculty. She has laughed and cried, sung or talked her way through more than 200 productions in opera, theatre and musical theatre, and twice that many concerts. Credits include Wolf Trap Farm Park for the Performing Arts, North Shore Music Theatre, National Symphony Orchestra, Lincoln Center Concerts, Yale Repertory Theatre, Yale Concerts at Norfolk, solo performances with the International Bach Society at Lincoln Center, Harvard University and Sanders Theatre Concerts at Harvard University, Dreamers Theatre, Ring Theatre, GableStage, Greater Miami Opera, Festival Miami, and New Theatre (over 30 roles). Conductors have ranged from Leonard Bernstein and Erich Kunzel, to Max Rudolf. TV and radio credits include The Mike Douglas Show, an NBC special hosted by Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops, appearances on ABC, NBC and CBS television, WQXR and WGBH Radio.
With husband Rafael de Acha, Daniel co-founded New Theatre, in Coral Gables, Floridalisted as one of the 50 Best Theatres in America, by the New York Drama Guild. New Theatre has commissioned and presented world premiers of dozens of new plays by national playwrights, including Anna in the Tropics, by Nilo Cruz, which won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and ran on Broadway in 2003receiving a Tony nomination in 2004 for Best New Play.
She has received numerous awards for her work, including Honorary Member for Life of Phi Kappa Phi, citing outstanding contributions to the arts. She has been recognized five times by the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts, is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society, and has received many performance awards throughout her professional career, including two National 1st Prize awards from the National Federation of Music Clubs, the Ethan Ayer Award, Regional 1st Prize winner of the Metropolitan Opera Auditions, and a Kathryn Long Fellowship Award from the Metropolitan Opera.
In 2004, she performed the role of Gertrude Stein, in the initial readings of Desmond Child's musical, JazzAge, slated for Broadway. In November, she visited Georgia State University, premiering a concert celebrating the legacy of Broadway legend, Jule Styne, and in 2005, continued with a series of concertsincluding a Festival Miami concert in September, and engagements at Penn State and the University of Missouri. South Florida audiences saw her in the role of the Nurse, in a six week run of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. And, at the end of the year, she performed the title in the world premiere of Ladies, and Not-So-Gentle Women, by Alfred Allan Lewis. In 2006, Daniel will be a Master Teacher for the NFAA national finals, working with the classical, pop, jazz and musical theatre vocal finalists. Later in the year, she will continue with a series of concerts and master classes, including a cabaret performance at the Longy School in Cambridge, and a master class at the New England Conservatory in Boston. She continues to lecture and adjudicate, coach professional performers, and sit on the boards of arts related organizations.
Staying in the Dorms
For PAI participants requiring lodging and meals, please read the attached information. Housing at the University of Miami is handled by the Department of Residence Halls. This information is supplied to allow you to estimate the costs for participation in PAI.
UNTIL YOUR ACCEPTANCE INTO PAI HAS BEEN CONFIRMED, PLEASE DO NOT APPLY FOR HOUSING. Once you have been notified of acceptance, you will then be given instructions to obtain housing.
PLEASE NOTE: Students living in the dorm will be supervised by a counselor provided by the Performing Arts Institute. The counselor will be living in the dorm with the students, and will be available to the students every day from 6:00 PM (when classes end) until classes begin the following morning. The counselor will also attend any evening activities scheduled for PAI participants, unless being escorted by other PAI faculty or staff. PAI participants are not allowed to leave the dorms unescorted during the evening hours, unless written permission is given by the students parent/guardian at least 24 hours in advance, and proper arrangements have been made with PAIs Program Director. No exceptions will be made.
