Imagination and Transformation
This class introduces students to theatre concepts and skills that will support their work as actors and as people. In order to play different characters, students must first learn about who they are, and this quarter will focus on identifying ways that the body, voice and imagination weave together as the tools of the trade.
Characters and Stories
The emphasis this quarter is on building a character, with particular attention to expanding the range of each individual young actor. Physical, vocal and social habits are identified in a supportive and nurturing environment, and activities introduce new ways to use the body and voice for characterization.
Performance Workshop
Written text is introduced this quarter with the emphasis on poems, monologues and scenes. Prior work in characterization is applied to the written word, which supports academic concepts of critical thinking, reading comprehension and predicting outcomes.
Playmakers
This culminating quarter invites students to create their own class play using the skills developed through the year. Improvisation, character creation and storytelling combined with writing activities will lead to an original performance piece.

Playing the Part 1 (improv)
Who are you? Where are you? What are you doing? What is your relationship with the other characters? This quarter is all about asking and answering the important questions of acting as it focuses on developing improvisational skills. Short-form improv games are also introduced.
Playing the Part 2 (script)
Analyzing and understanding how to apply skills of characterization and improvisation to text is the focus of this session, through scenes, monologues and poems.

Acting Skills and Techniques
Activities are designed to increase the range of the young actor; vocally, physically and emotionally. In this time of transition, students receive encouragement and strategies for managing change and conflict that are applicable to real-life situations and to improve their work on stage.
Building a Character
This class explores the dynamic of the person, the actor and the character, addressing concepts of getting in character, staying in character and transitioning out of character in a direct and relevant way. Students will learn what these phrases mean and, more importantly, how to incorporate them in their work.
Monologues and Dialogue
Individual strengths and areas needing improvement are identified in an interactive, fun and collaborative atmosphere. Students will develop a clear understanding of where they are in their creative process, and figure out where they want to be through theatre games, monologues, neutral dialogue and scenes.
Cre-8!
Students will create a series of original works within the realm of a specific set of circumstances. Eight-minute scenes, eight-person improv games, and eight-second storytelling will create (pun intended) a forum for showcasing their work of the year and individual growth.

An Actor Prepares

Teens will explore the craft of acting and begin to develop a way of working that balances talent and inspiration with technique and method. Activities use Stanislavskis principles as a foundation while exposing students to diverse schools of thought and other acting philosophies.

Acting: Relationships and Character

This class works on expanding the range of the actor through the creation of honest, engaging relationships for the stage. Students will be challenged with looking outside themselves to identify and re-create a wide spectrum of human interaction through physical, vocal and emotional work.

Text Analysis/Scene Study

Actors must analyze a script for information about their characters and clues as to the choices they must make in performance. Plot development strategies and the arc and climax of dramatic conflict will also be identified and explored. Students interested in directing will have the opportunity to work on scenes as well.

Performance Autobiographies

This quarter provides a forum for our teen actors to express their feelings, opinions, experiences and style through the creation of performance pieces based on their lives. Using their understanding of character, storytelling, dramatic structure and performance, each meaningful piece combines life and art.
